Prolapse

Pelvic Organ Prolapse

Pelvic organ prolapse is more common than many women realise, yet it’s often not spoken about. At Alara Women’s Health, we want women to know that effective, supportive treatment is available.

What is Prolapse?

Prolapse happens when the muscles and tissues of the pelvic floor are no longer able to fully support the pelvic organs (such as the bladder, uterus, or bowel). This can cause one or more of these organs to shift downwards, creating a feeling of heaviness, bulging, or discomfort in the vaginal area.

Common Symptoms of Prolapse

  • A feeling of pressure, heaviness, or bulging in the pelvic region
  • Lower back ache or dragging sensation
  • Difficulty emptying the bladder or bowel
  • Leaking of urine or stool
  • Discomfort or pain with intimacy
  • Symptoms worsening after standing for long periods or at the end of the day

How We Can Help

Our women’s health physiotherapists provide evidence-based, compassionate care for prolapse at every stage. We focus not only on relieving symptoms but also on improving your strength, confidence, and long-term wellbeing.

Treatment may include:

  • Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy – Exercises to strengthen and support pelvic floor muscles.
  • Education & Lifestyle Advice – Guidance on safe lifting, exercise, and daily activities to reduce strain.
  • Breath & Core Training – Learning how to use your core and breathing techniques to support your pelvic floor.
  • Individualised Exercise Programs – Including Pilates, tailored to your needs and stage of life.
  • Scar Tissue & Manual Therapy – To address tension, pain, or restrictions that may be contributing to symptoms.
  • Referral & Collaboration – We work closely with GPs, gynaecologists, or urogynaecologists if surgical input is required.

We take a holistic view of women’s health — because prolapse isn’t just about muscles, it’s about how you feel in your body, your daily comfort, and your quality of life. Our aim is to empower you with the knowledge and tools to manage prolapse confidently, whether you’re aiming to prevent progression, reduce symptoms, or recover after surgery.
